What type of clothing should I wear?

You should wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move freely.

Can I use a video camera during the lesson?

Yes. You can bring a video camera; it will help you memorize what was done during the class as you practice at home.

Do I need dance shoes for our classes?

We recommend that you purchase and wear dance shoes with suede bottoms for your classes.

If you do not have a pair of dance shoes, you can use flexible leather-soled shoes at the beginning.

We encourage you to carry your dance shoes with you and change into them before class, especially if it is raining or snowing.

Wet, damp, or dirty shoes are not allowed on the dance floor to prevent damage to the floor. Sandals, boots, and sneakers are not advisable.

What do you do if a child gets sick or is injured in class?

In the event of a classroom illness or accident, parent/guardian(s) will be notified immediately by phone number if they are not already in the building.

If a parent/guardian is not accessible at the time of an illness or injury, the instructor and company director will make choices to protect the well-being of the student.

What can be done to help with separation anxiety?

If your child cries or demonstrates anxiety prior to class, you can try a number of effective techniques to help with the situation. Bring your child early to class so they can have more time to acclimate to their surroundings.

If your child is scared, have them bring a security item, such as a favorite toy or blanket to journey with them into the dance floor. It can be placed by the mirror for a feeling of safety.

Give your child a pep talk with the promise of a reward (e.g., a visit to the park, library, etc.) for successful completion of the class.

Avoid allowing your child to dictate how the situation will be resolved, and talk to the instructor to come to an agreement about how to handle your particular situation.

Please do not be discouraged if your child experiences difficulty in joining the class; this is very normal and we are here to help!

Can my child take class if we arrive late for group classes?

If a student is 10 or more minutes late to class, the instructor may ask the student to observe instead of participate for both safety reasons and to avoid unnecessary class disruption.

Please try to make sure your child arrives prepared promptly for class. Tardiness is disruptive to both the other students and the instructor.

What is proper dance class etiquette?

At Ballroom Dance of NJ, we work hard to cultivate a friendly and safe learning environment, where students feel comfortable to explore movement creatively.

In order to protect this environment, disruptive and disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. Students displaying continual negative behavior may be asked to sit out, leave class, and in extreme circumstances removed from the program.

All students are expected to be prompt, properly dressed, and respectful of their fellow classmates and instructor.

Good etiquette for dancing is to arrive on time, enter the room when invited, and stretch/warm up until instructed to do otherwise. All outside business (snacks, phone calls, bathroom visits, hair, dressing, etc.) should be taken care of in advance of the start time of dance class.

Entering and exiting the classroom while class is in session is allowed only with permission of the instructor.

What days and times are available for private lessons?

We offer both day and evening lessons during the week and on weekends. Let us know what your scheduling needs are, and we will set up a lesson time that works for you.

Can I choose any dance to start with?

Yes. With private lessons you can choose to start with whatever dance you would like to learn. The instructor will make suggestions as to which dance will be easiest to get you started, but the choice is always up to you.

Can we bring our children while we have a private lesson?

Yes. You can bring your children to class as long as they are not disruptive.

Do I need to have a partner?

No. Having a partner is not required. Private lessons can be taken with or without a partner. If you do not have a partner, your dance instructor will be your partner. In group lessons, you will dance with other students.

What is the difference between private lessons and group classes?

Private lessons are for up to 2 people with the full attention of the instructor on you and your needs. The date, time, and dance for private lessons can be requested by the customer. Group classes are predetermined classes for specific dances and levels with dates and times usually set up on the Calendar.

What are the benefits of private lessons versus group classes?

In private lessons, we are able to devote our full attention to your needs. In group classes, we teach general principles and steps, without focused individual instruction.

Do I need to have any dance experience to take lessons?

No. We teach students of all levels. We customize private classes to your personal needs. No matter how much or how little experience you have, we have a class for you.

How many lessons do I have to take to learn how to dance?

Every student learns at his or her own pace. Your pace will depend on your level of dedication and your commitment to practice. With more practice, you will feel more comfortable with dancing and you will learn more.

How do I decide which lesson package to choose?

There is no best program for everyone. Depending on what your needs are, and if you are preparing for a special event at a particular time, we will help you decide on the best package. Try our SPECIAL DEALS class: it is a great way to get started; after the class, one of our experienced dance instructors will be able to recommend the best package for you.

Custom Group Classes are for friends, family members, or people who you know and who have a similar interest in learning to ballroom dance and the date, time, and dance can be requested by you. When is the Weekly Dance Practice?

Our Weekly Dance Practice - 45 minutes long.

What is the difference - Weekly Dance Practice vs Monthly Dance Socials?

Most important in Ballroom Dancing - it is repetition! That is why we created that class - Weekly Dance Practice.

Weekly Dance Practice almost every week at 6:15pm to 7pm on Sunday. This is like a dance group class and 45 min long. We will review all dance steps, dance basic principals and you be able to dance a little bit under wonderful melodies of all your combinations, if you have one..., If you did not learn yet that dance/s - that absolutely fine - just simply repeat basic movement which previously you learned with dance instructor.

Monthly dance social - once a month (usually second Sunday of the month). Time 6:30pm to 9:30pm. And this is a special event. You and your friends or relatives can relax, learn, socialize, meet new people and of course dance under wonderful Latin and Ballroom music! At each Dance Social you can try a complimentary group dance class where you can learn the basic movements of various Latin or Ballroom or Social dances. You are offered a small assortment of snacks, coffee, tea and sweets. If you have a birthday this month (when the party is taking place…), we will prepare for you a special cake with candles and a little surprise!

We organized Weekly Dance Practice for everyone who would like to repeat and/or review all your steps or your dance combinations which you learned previously on our Group Classes or Private Lessons.

We are playing TWO dance melodies of each dance and in the first music we are repeating basic movements, rhythm, and ballroom dance steps which you had learned with us in the Waltz, Cha-cha, Tango, Rumba, Swing, Samba, Foxtrot and much more. You will just simply follow your dance instructor and will warm-up and gain understanding of how to connect your movement with the music.

The second dance melodies of the same dance - is the fun time! Time to enjoy the music and try out your dance steps and dance combinations to the beautiful Ballroom Dance melodies!

If you did not learn yet that dance - that absolutely fine - just simply repeat basic movement which previously you repeat or learned with dance instructor.

By using same idea we will go through all dances on that class. So, you will have chance to repeat and memorize all of your dance combinations and will be fully ready and feel comfortable to dance at our Monthly Dance Social!

With Wedding Group Classes, you will be taught the most common dances that can be done at a wedding, but nothing will be customized—for example, there won’t be any special entrances or endings choreographed.

Yes, you can dance with your children during class. We have a special package for "Classes for Parents and Children" so you can enjoy and spend time with your children. There is a short time in life that you be with your children and we've created this special package just for that.

How many classes include the program "Classes for Parents and Children"?

At "Classes for Parents and Children" we offering to have FIVE group classes. We think for that amount of classes we be able to give you good basic understanding in 3 to 5 different ballroom and latin dances like - Swing, Foxtrot, Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Waltz, Cha-cha-cha and more... just name it... and we will make you and your family happy!

There can be other group classes or private classes on the floor during your class, but we ensure that there is enough space for everyone to feel comfortable.

Yes, we've created a special dance program for this called “Family Dance Program” and we have two packages: one for "Classes for Parents and Children" and the other for “Classes for Grandparents, Parents, and Children”.

It is a great idea to join this class if you are planning to have a family reunion, birthday party, or some sort of big family gathering. You can come learn the dances together and spend quality time together.

For example - foxtrot, waltz, and rhumba work well in the beginning or salsa or swing may be a little more rhythmical but very attractive and also very easy to learn and have fun with. Of course, the choice will always be yours.

FAQs PRIVATE LESSONS FOR CHILDREN / JUNIOR

From what age is it best to start to dance?

There is no best age to start. Every one is welcome to and is able to dance from 3 years old to 100.

Everyone has different goals, some want to learn one dance and some may want to compete in dance competitions, and everyone has different abilities and different interests.

From 3 years old and up everyone is welcome.

How long are children's classes?

Children’s classes are 45 minutes long.

Can parents be present during the class?

Parents are welcome to be present during classes.

However, from our experience, it is usually best for parents to not be present as there will be less interruption and the child is more likely to stay focused and to pick up more information.

If my child is sick, what do I have to do?

You will need to give us a call within 24 hours to notify us of your cancelation in respect of your instructor’s time.

If my child misses a class, what options do I have?

If your child misses a Private Class and you did not notify us within 24 hours before the class, you will be charged for the class.

Is it necessary to have a partner for my daughter/son for a Private or Group Class?

It is not necessary to have a partner for your son/daughter.

If your child does not have a partner, he or she can dance with the dance instructor.

Children can also go to pro/am competitions with their Pro-instructor.

They are also welcome to prepare show dances and to perform at our showcases and special events.

In group classes, we rotate partners, and your child will learn to lead and follow.

If we are going to be away for some amount of time, can we get a refund for our classes?

For Private Classes, if you plan to be away, we can setup your classes around you when you will be away.

For Custom Group Classes we can schedule your classes week to week to work with your schedule.

Ballroom Dance of NJ is very happy to offer you CHILDREN / JUNIOR GROUP CLASSES.

Group Classes for children is a great way to start ballroom dancing - just choose between our group classes by appropriate level and age of your child. Look to our CALENDAR.

What dance programs can you offer for children?

Ballroom Dance of NJ brings to your attention group lessons for children for Latin and Ballroom dances. Our groups are held in our beautiful venue on Sundays. NOTE: in during summer time 2020 - our group classes on TUESDAY - please check CALENDAR.

What type of the dances can you offer for children’s dance program?

In the initial training in the lesson, it is proposed to teach your child both the Latin program (such dances as Samba, Jive, ChaChaCha, Rumba...) and Ballroom (such dances as Waltz, Tango, Quickstep ...).
At a higher level of dancing, we divide the groups in different direction of interest.

Do you divide children by the age category? How about dance level?

In our group lessons we divide children into age categories and always at different levels of dancing.

In the initial training of the lesson, it is proposed to teach your child both the Latin program (such dances as Samba, Jive, ChaChaCha, Rumba...) and Ballroom (such dances as Waltz, Tango, Quickstep ...).
At a higher level of dancing, we divide the groups in a different direction of interest.

Do you offer any Holiday Party or / and kind of dance performance for children?

Christmas Party in December:

During the dance season from September to June, our company hosts special events for your children, where they can perform and please you and your loved ones.

The first event is on the Christmas Party in December, our young talents will be able to show what they learned or how they improved their dance skills from the beginning of the dance season.

Latin and Ballroom dances in a competitive version will be offered to your attention. And also, at your wish and your request, we will prepare with your child at private classes and perform solo numbers with interesting New Year's inserts.

Every year at our holiday party, we are glad to meet with Santa Clause - a lot of happiness, laughter, dancing and, of course, well-deserved gifts for our super dancers!

June Recital:

By the middle of June we will prepare new event and invite you to our next Dance Recital.

Again we will offer you to watch, enjoy and appreciate your emotions and applause for those performances and the dance mastery that we taught your children throughout the season!

During the same party, we will offer our non-ordinary show program - Talent Show!

As we know, many of your children are involved in other sports or arts, such as playing the piano, singing, violin, guitar or marshal arts, fencing, gymnastics, tennis, etc. etc. We will try our best to combine your child's passion with ballroom dancing!

Believe us - it is very interesting and peculiar!

Can we invite our relatives and our child friends to one of your dance events?

Ballroom Dance of NJ are very family oriented and therefore, at all our events for children, we are very pleased to see both parents and relatives!

We will do our best so that everyone present has a great mood and has the opportunity to learn and dance such social dances as Salsa, Waltz, Bachata, Foxtrot, Swing with their wonderful children!

It is preferable to make your decision and sign-up your child to one of your Children / Junior Programs in the beginning of the season.

Our schedule for NEW group classes will be ready on the end of July or beginning of August.

We understand that for various reasons you can be late to sign-up a child in our groups at the beginning of the season and therefore we are happy to accept children both at the beginning and during the dance semesters; it depends on the availability.

If you do not have any Group Classes for my child, do you offer any alternative way?

If we do not have the opportunity to enroll your child in groups that already exist - we offer you an alternative - either private classes or you could be on the waiting list for new group lessons.

If BDNJ decides to cancel classes due to bad weather or other reasons – we will offer Make-up Class on following Wednesday (after canceled on Sunday…).

For example, if BDNJ cancels class on Sunday 01/12 because of bad weather condition – we will offer a make-up class on the following Wednesday 01/15 at 5:30pm).

NOTE: Ballroom Dance of NJ will not offer make-up class that are cancelled by students at any circumstances.

What is the Cancelation Policy at Ballroom Dance of NJ?

Cancelation policy – Ballroom Dance of NJ needs to receive a notification letter from parents in writing, ONE MONTH in advance, then we will re-calculate classes and refund the balance to you.

Ballroom Dance of NJ would like to deliver to your kids, high quality information about technical and musical aspect, physical preparation and coordination, communication and many many more areas…

And to do that we need yours and children’s commitment. And we have to see your kids consistently – MINIMUM once a week.

If your child become more interested in ballroom dancing we will recommend you to have 2 to 3 group classes and practice sessions and 1 to 2 private classes a week.

What is "Special Custom Group Class for Children" about?

Special Custom Group Class is a perfect class for an upcoming special event such as Sweet 16, Birthday party or Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

This class allows you to customize a private group class to learn the dances you want to, or learn a special show dance to perform at your upcoming event.

Can we request what type of dance we would like our children to have during "Special Custom Group Class for Children"?

Yes! You are welcome to make a choice about music, type of the dance or even a dance pose or any of your visions we will try to incorporate and make the your ideas it come alive by teaching your kids, that is why we created this one of the kind class.

This class allows you to customize a private group class to learn the dances you want, or learn a special show dance to perform at your upcoming event.

We invite you to visit our exclusive Dance Social once a month.

Our party takes place on the second Sunday of each month from 6:30 pm until 9:30 pm at our beautiful place at: 214 Springfield Ave, Summit, NJ 07901.

NOTE: Dates may vary depending on different holidays or dance tournament schedule. Therefore, please visit our website and check our CALENDAR periodically.

Is it just a regular party or you’re doing something different each time?

Each party is special & unique and has a different theme; it can be International Food Party or White Party or Game-Dance party and many more interesting and enjoyable ideas. Come, Dance and Enjoy!

You and your friends or relatives can relax, learn, socialize, meet new people and of course dance under wonderful Latin and Ballroom music!

At each Dance Social you can try a complimentary group dance class where you can learn the basic movements of various Latin, Ballroom or even Social dances.

What is a Dance Recital for Children?

Twice a year, we offer you a Dance Recital, where your young dance stars can share what they have learned over the past period of time with their friends and loved ones.

They will show you what dances they learned, or what new dance figures they developed.

When is the Dance Recital for Children usually?

Usually we organize our Dance Recitals in mid-December and another Dance Recital in June.

How do you run the Dance Recital for Children?

We divide our Recital into two parts...

In the first part of our program you will see the performances in a competition style - it’s just like children performing at dance tournaments. Your children will show all their dances that they have learned. We arrange children in pairs or they dance solo or another option is to dance with a professional teacher.

About Judgement:

Our professional teachers or invited friends give their ratings / suggestions for all dancers.

Very often, we invite anyone to be part of a panel of judges to give an alternative assessment and show what an ordinary person sees when she or he comes to a dance event.

These are either parents or friends or relatives and usually do not know anything in ballroom dancing...

About Perfomance:

The second part is a show program where you can see and enjoy children's dance show numbers prepared during private lessons. Our young stars will perform a show with their dance partner or solo and maybe with a professional dance teacher.

What is a Children Talent Showcase?

We bring to your attention a very unique event where you can see how your children will show their dancing skills in conjunction with their “other talents or hobbies”.

How will you pick-up any ideas for dance performance?

We know that children, in addition to dancing, usually have an interest of study musical instruments - such as the piano, violin, guitar, learn to draw or sing, or engage in martial arts or some kind of sports - such as gymnastics, soccer, and tennis or study other types of dances with enthusiasm - for example, ballet or jazz.

And that's great!

This is what comprehensively develops your children and they grow up different!

How will you create a show or performance for Children Talent Showcase? What is your plan?

Using your child's additional talent or hobbies, we propose creating an interesting show - combining everything together!

Can you incorporate / use ideas from my child?

Absolutely YES! We will always listen to the opinion of your child.

We suggest that the kids choose the music for their show number and we will help to create an image for the show together, discuss which costumes will be used, how and what will or will not work.

Of course, in order to create such a number, you need to do individual private lessons...

With whom will my child perform in during Children Talent Showcase?

We suggest that your child create and perform a show number either with his partner or with a professional teacher.

Can i, like a parent, also perform with my child too?

If parents have a desire and opportunity, we will be very pleased to include you in our show too!

Practicing your routines while other lessons are going on is time well spent.

But going to the special Master Class practice sessions means that you’ll be on a floor with other serious dancers, and getting advice in the context of the ‘bigger picture’.

Who is teaching a MASTER CLASS?

We invite you to a Master Class in order to improve your dancing skills.
At our classes you can see, learn and work with world-class top teachers.
These are all the people with whom we worked together throughout our dance career.

What are the benefits a MASTER CLASS?

At a Master Class, you can increase your dancing level, ask all your questions, try new exercises, build new routines, work out and improve your dance position and many more interesting things.

A Master Class is one of the best options / ways to improve the dance and your knowledge!

With our Activity Package, you can buy a set number of tickets for Group Classes or Dance Socials or some Special Event at a discounted price, but instead of committing to a whole session, you can drop-in and take the class or dance socials when it fits into your schedule.

Where we can use tickets from Activity Package?

Activity Package very unique form of payment toward to variety of different activity in Ballroom Dance of NJ.

We are offering for your attention - Adult Group Classes, some Children / Junior Group Classes (IMPORTANT NOTE - not in all children's group classes we allow to use Activity Package - please talk to owners of Ballroom Dance of NJ), Weekly Dance Practice, Monthly Dance Social and Children Dance Recital / Talent Showcase at Twin Maples in Summit. Yes please - we allow to use tickets from Activity Package for adult group classes. One ticket per person to any adult group classes you would like to attend.

Can i use ticket from Activity Package for Weekly Dance Practice?

Yes please - we allow to use tickets from Activity Package for Weekly Dance Practice. One ticket per person to any Weekly Dance Practice you would like to attend.
